Stay Gold, Ponyboy Historical Models of Childhood in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders - Literature Essay Samples

S.E. Hinton’s seminal first novel, The Outsiders, is widely credited as the birth of contemporary teenage fiction. While J.D. Salinger is often seen as the first writer to truly capture the modern teenage mindset sixteen years earlier (albeit in a work aimed towards adult readers) with his legendary novel The Catcher in the Rye, it was Hinton, a tomboyish high-school student from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who took the teenage voice and presented it in a manner that was even more palpable, visceral, and lifelike, than even the spoiled, whiny Holden Caulfield could ever imitate. She achieves this voice through her characters. Hinton’s greasers are rowdy, downtrodden, and more than a little flawed; they embody a youthful vigor and a powerful sense of poignant world-weariness unheard of in children’s literature before Hinton’s time. And yet, whether it was intentional or through a lack of writing experience, Hinton’s characters, despite their overwhelming modern ity, fit squarely into archetypes that had been prevalent in literary reconstructions of childhood for the past several centuries. My goal is to determine how the characters of The Outsiders fit into these traditional historic models of childhood and also how Hinton utilizes these models to both encapsulate and subvert the western canon and create a uniquely modern literature for a new generation of young readers. Of these historical models, perhaps the most famous is the concept of the â€Å"romantic child.† This model revolves around the belief that children are â€Å"the embodiment of innocence† (Hintz 15). In terms of The Outsiders, the most obvious candidate for this model is the character of Johnny. Johnny is portrayed as meek, timid, and introverted—quite the opposite of his fellow Greasers. Hinton describes him as â€Å"a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers† (Hinton 11). Whereas characters like Dally lash out in anger at an unfair world, Johnny internalizes the injustice he has experienced and retreats further into himself out of fear. However, instead of becoming hard and bitter, Johnny does manage to maintain his decency, as illustrated by him rescuing the children from the burning church in Chapter 6. This sacrificial act ultimately leads to his death, upon which Hinton elevates him to almost martyr-l ike status. It is through his dying plea to Ponyboy to â€Å"[stay] gold† – a reference to a Robert Frost poem discussed earlier in the novel – that Johnny fulfills his role as a symbol of lost childhood innocence (149). On the other hand, the character of Dally functions as an extreme contrast to Johnny. Whereas Johnny comes to embody innate innocence and virtue in spite of the cruelty of the world around him, Dally represents the natural depravity of an undisciplined child, a prime example of the model of the â€Å"sinful child† found in Puritan ideology. He is a full-fledged victim of his environment, and is described by Hinton as having â€Å"blue, blazing [eyes], cold with a hatred of the whole world† (10). He follows a strict Machiavellian philosophy, stating: â€Å"get tough like me and you won’t get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin’ can touch you [.]† (147). Dally is a rather extreme example of what a child can do when left to his or her own self-destructive tendencies. Ponyboy Curtis, the novel’s narrator, is a bit more difficult to pin down, but one could argue he fits nicely into the category of the â€Å"developing child,† or a child that â€Å"[exists] along a continuum of development with the adult† (Freud 39). Ponyboy’s character follows the basic trajectory of the Buildungsroman (or â€Å"novel of education†) in that he grows mentally over the course of the novel and reaches a level of maturity and experience commonly associated with adulthood. At the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy is relatively comfortable adhering to the herd mentality followed by the Greasers and the Socs. He initially views the Socs in the same dehumanizing, stereotype-informed way that they view the Greasers, calling them â€Å"[w]hite trash with mustangs and madras† (Hinton 55). Through his interactions with Cherry Valance, Ponyboy begins to see the Socs as complex human beings with their own struggles and motivations. He pla intively states, â€Å"It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset† (40-41). Later on, as Ponyboy reflects on the character of Bob Sheldon (the Soc that Johnny kills in self-defense in Chapter 4), Ponyboy remarks: â€Å"I looked at Bobs picture and I could begin to see the person we had killed. A reckless, hot-tempered boy, cocky and scared stiff at the same time† (162). This newfound sympathy for the Socs gradually grows stronger over the course of the novel, as does Ponyboy’s self-awareness. Toward the end of the book, he says: Suddenly it wasnt only a personal thing to me. I could picture hundreds of boys living on the wrong sides of cities, boys with black eyes who jumped at their own shadows. Hundreds of boys who maybe watched sunsets and looked at the stars and ached for something better. I could see boys going down under street lights because they were mean and tough and hated the world, and it was too late to tell them there was still good in itThere should be some help, someone to tell them before it was too late. Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldnt be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore (179). It is at this point that Ponyboy achieves something resembling adult wisdom. Not only does he become enlightened, he assumes an authoritative position by symbolic ally and literally becoming the author of his own story. At the very end of the novel, it is revealed that the book the reader has just finished is a work written by Ponyboy specifically to inform his audience of the plight of a group of people previously without a voice: namely the Greasers, but also the â€Å"realistic teenager† that S.E. Hinton originally sought to portray in her writing. It is through Ponyboy that Hinton ultimately achieves this goal. By creating characters that talk and act like ordinary teenagers but still fit into traditional models of childhood, Hinton has essentially reinvented the tradition of children’s literature in the western world. Gone are the days of â€Å"Mary Jane Goes to Prom and [ the] horse books† that Hinton spoke negatively of in an interview with the Outsiders Fan Club (â€Å"Exclusive Interview with SE. Hinton†). Instead, we have Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally—symbols of the modern teenager and his or her role in literature and art.

Saving energy on cooling and heating Queensland is affected by mild winters and summers that require air conditioning, refreshing in pools and showers. All these activities consume a lot of electricity. According to Bulut, et al., (2015, p. 765) 40% of Australian energy is spent on cooling and heating activities. To reduce energy one should consider: Before using the air conditioner in cooling the house, one should use fans, close curtains and shut down windows. This will help reduce the amount of sunlight heating the house directly. In case of soaring of mercury, do not turn on the air conditioning below 24 degrees. From the study by Di Matteo Monaco , (2011, p. 222) shows that turning on air conditioner below 24% increases between 5-10% consumed units of energy. In case one uses cooling or heating systems in their homes, always cool or heat the place you want to work from to avoid cooling or heating other rooms which are not needed. This will help in reducing energy consumption on such goods. Cost-benefit analysis For Queensland to provide the safe, productive and comfortable environment, the system of lighting must offer suitable condition with the required level of illumination. Conclusion Use of energy grows daily due to increased demand in the countries. In order to reduce energy one needs to use better appliances in order to reduce energy consumption costs. Lighting has an opportunity of saving energy. A cost-benefit analysis on the use of LED to replace another existing bulb is used to show benefits. The initial use of LED installation may be greater than traditional light installation. The use of LEDs results in lower energy consumption cost and cost of maintenance. The World is changed by Us In my early childhood, I had always been a fan of the great actor, Robin Williams, for the movies he did that amaze us and make us laugh. Sadly, he past away on August 11th, 2014, the day before celebrating my 17th birthday. However, I remember some influence that he brought on the screen that inspired me in a riveting way. One of the most influential cult films that has been a favorite for many people, including mine, is "Dead Poet's Society." One quote that was mentioned by Robin Williams' character, 'John Keating,' in the film, was a simple phrase that had a marvelous influence on me. He said, "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." That tremendous phrase is something that has impacted me personally in my life and should be reflected upon by those who take advantage to influence the world emphatically. The word change means to adapt or become entirely different. An example that has helped personally to understand this phrase, is sharing the gospel with everyone. As a ex-missionary, I know that the gospel can indeed change the world. There are also other ways. We learn that this world today, many people try to influence us to adapt something good or merely not good. "Words and ideas," are used in many different ways. Poetry, the media, books, and politics. Some entertainment, such as music, movies, and television, are also created to have controversial or positive influence on others. For example, I myself like music from John Mayer. However, in his most popular hit,"Waiting on the World Change," it has a clear understatement that suggests the world should change itself rather than our influence should change the world. I'm not trying to diminish the thoughts and opinions of others, but to give a clear understanding that we are ourselves have the privilege to refine this world and transform it in the best possible way with our own words and ideas. I myself need to improve and all of us have a way to improve. Something that I will always remember is that there aren't specific people that can refine the world, all of us can.

American Murderers. â€Å"Somebody killed my parents!† cried Lyle Menendez, on a 911 call while at the scene of his parents brutally murdered, yet the perfect all American family, the family with money, power, and ambition. Nearly thirty years ago, the first claimed ‘trial of the century’ and first ever televised cases took place, the Menendez brothers who brutally murdered their parents. How can spoiled rich kids who had it all spiral out of control and commit such a crime? From riches to confessions, the Menendez brothers became one of the most shocking, notorious duo to ever commit the ‘perfect’ crime. Born into privilege and wealth, Lyle and Erik Menendez were the children of Jose and Kitty Menendez. Jose Menendez was a refugee from Cuba who was ambitious and determined to reach the top of businesses in America. Rags to riches tale to which Jose became Hollywood executive producer. Kitty Menendez was considered a ‘beauty queen’. (Church). The two shorty married after meeting at Southern Illinois University then giving birth to their children, Lyle and Erik Menendez. (Church). She was an at home mom while Jose was a successful businessman. Jose was praised to be highly intelligent but also arrogant and and mistreated workers. (Church). Jose and his family’s relationship began to deteriorate leading up to the one of the most shocking events in Beverly Hills history. On the night of August 20, 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were relaxing peacefully when they were shot to death from the hands of their sons. Lyle, 20 and Erik, 18 attempted to put the blame on someone else until they were eventually arrested in 1990 for the murder of their parents and put on trial. In order to achieve full success, Jose Menendez instilled tough parenting and high expectations above the dysfunctional family. Lyle and Erik were destined in Jose’s life to attend ivy league schools, become pro tennis athletes, and achieving the American dream Jose left Cuba for. However, both boys were not reaching near Jose’s expectations, causing various conflicts to occur from time to time. Confrontations to threats caused a division upon the family, enough for outsiders to assume   Jose having an authoritarian parenting style in order to discipline his children. Kitty never intervened between the interactions of her husbands and sons; she was suspected to be an unstable mother with addiction to alcohol and drugs. (AE). Kitty had difficulty dealing with Jose’s multiple affairs, but instead she was suggested to enable the authoritarian behavior and was violent towards her sons as well. The boys were considered disappointments of the family, even discussed a s â€Å"ruining their marriage† and picking favorites. (AE). National PTSD studies suggest that long term symptoms of childhood sexual abuse include difficulty to set limits with others, low self-esteem, and reckless behaviors. Extreme controlling and incredibly high expectations stressed and teared the family apart, persuading Lyle and Erik to claim self-defense as the reasoning to murder their parents. The Menendez brothers brought what was considered bizarre and rare case of childhood sexual abuse; in court matters, sexual abuse from childhood was almost unheard of, causing prosecution to fail to address the allegations made from the brothers and family testimonies. In early teen years, Lyle stated, his mother   harassed him with increasingly bizarre sexual conduct. (Abrahamson). However, both parents are claimed to have performed brutal and disgusting sexual acts with their sons. Two cousins and a friend of the brothers have testified that in ages between 8-17, each brother has confided about their fears of abuse; from implying oral sex to rape,   Erik asked his cousin Andy if the sexual contacts were considered a â€Å"normal father-son relationship†. (Abrahamson).The abuse was stated to cause a great fear and endangerment to the boys’ lives. Each abuse was kept in secret, causing a great dispute when Lyle discovered his little brother Erik was still part of th e horrendous acts from his father.(Abrahamson). Worried about his image because of a potential run for politics, Jose was stated to threatening to kill the boys if they released the secret to the police or possibly the media. Multiple attempts to flee the home were stopped by the power of Jose Menendez, from threats of murder to entrapment at home if the boys wanted financial help with their lives. Besides authoritarian parenting and years of alleged sexual abuse, why else would they do it? Growing up in Princeton and Beverly Hills, the brothers were exploited to the lavish and rich lifestyle. From living in a 9,000 sq ft mansion with private tennis coaches, the Menendez brothers were only familiar with nothing less than their extravagant lifestyle, at the cost of following their father’s expectations. (Church). Erik was interested in acting, being a disappointment to his father’s ideal picture of an occupation that brings great success. However, Erik wrote a 66-page script titled â€Å"Friends† where a spoiled rich young man murders his parents for inheritance money. (Worthen). The plot seemingly along the lines of the the crime scene of the Menendez family and perhaps suggested that the murder was premeditated. Lyle is rumored to alter his father’s will after Jose removed both of his sons from the it, in order to inherit $14 million dollars. Just d ays after the murder of their parents, Lyle and Erik lived lavishly with purchases of cars, a restaurant, private tennis coach, etc., spending nearly $700,000 of their inheritance. (Worthen). Only the removal of their parents fasten the process of obtaining millions at a young age for the brothers. Throughout the trial, viewers were beyond fascinated with figuring why the Menendez brothers committed the horrendous crime. As one of Cohen’s Seven Monster Theses, monsters are considered a kind of a desire; two spoiled rich kids crossed the line and murdered the two people that brought them into this world out of anger, fear, and terror. Individuals desire to learn about rare, unnatural behaviors humans conduct. Victims are usually chosen upon preferences, so viewers wanted to figure out, why did the Menendez brothers choose their very own parents and not others, expanding their desire to be educated on why the brothers did it.
